You do not need to wait for a thorough examination to suspect your LEV is not doing its job. Here are five warning signs that should trigger a closer look.
1. Visible Dust, Fume, or Mist Escaping the Hood
If you can see contaminant escaping from around the extraction point, the system is not capturing effectively. This might mean reduced airflow, a blocked filter, or a hood that has been moved or modified since commissioning.
2. Unusual Noise or Vibration from the Fan
Changes in fan noise, whether louder, quieter, or rattling, indicate mechanical problems. A failing fan bearing, a slipping belt, or an unbalanced impeller will all reduce airflow before they cause a complete failure.
3. Workers Reporting Smells or Irritation
If people working near the extraction are noticing smells, throat irritation, or eye watering that they did not experience before, the system may not be controlling exposure adequately. Take this seriously. These are early indicators of failed control.
4. Filters That Never Seem to Need Changing
Counter-intuitively, filters that stay clean for extended periods may indicate that airflow is so low that contaminant is not reaching the filter, it is staying in the breathing zone instead. Check pressure drop gauges and airflow readings.
5. The System Has Been Modified Without Re-Commissioning
Every time a hood is moved, ductwork is altered, or a new branch is added, the system balance changes. Without re-commissioning, existing extraction points may be starved of airflow while the new branch takes more than its share. See our LEV commissioning service.
