Why Safety Cabinets Need Specialist Testing
Microbiological safety cabinets protect operators, the product, and the environment from hazardous biological agents. They rely on precise airflow patterns and HEPA filtration to maintain containment. Any deterioration in performance, whether from filter loading, fan degradation, or seal failure, compromises that protection.
Regular testing to BS EN 12469 confirms the cabinet is still providing the containment it was designed for.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should safety cabinets be tested?
At least annually, after any filter change, after relocation, and after any maintenance that may affect airflow. Many containment facilities test every 6 months.
What is KI Discus testing?
KI Discus is a containment verification test that challenges the cabinet’s operator protection by generating a potassium iodide aerosol inside the cabinet and sampling outside. It confirms the cabinet is containing biological hazards.
Do you decontaminate before servicing?
Yes. Cabinets handling hazardous biological agents must be decontaminated before any internal work including filter changes. We carry out formaldehyde or hydrogen peroxide decontamination as appropriate.
