Why Fume Cupboards Need Regular Testing
A fume cupboard is only protecting your people if it is actually containing the hazardous substances being used inside it. Face velocity drops over time as filters load, fans degrade, and sash mechanisms wear. Without regular testing, you have no evidence the cupboard is still providing adequate containment.
Annual testing to BS EN 14175 confirms containment performance, identifies deterioration, and gives you the evidence base for COSHH compliance.
What We Test
- Face velocity measurement across the sash opening (BS EN 14175-4)
- Containment testing where required
- Sash operation and travel
- Airflow alarms and indicators
- Visual inspection of internal baffles and slots

- Fan performance
- Ductwork integrity

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should fume cupboards be tested?
At least annually under COSHH, with more frequent checks for high-use or high-risk applications. Many organisations test every 6 months.
What face velocity should a fume cupboard achieve?
Typically 0.4-0.5 m/s average across the sash opening at normal working height, but the required velocity depends on the substances being used and the risk assessment.
Can you test ducted and recirculating fume cupboards?
Yes. We test both ducted (externally vented) and recirculating (filtered) fume cupboards.
