What Is UCV Servicing?

Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) canopies are the systems that deliver laminar or exponential airflow over the operating zone in theatres, creating an ultra-clean environment that dramatically reduces surgical site infection. They require specialist servicing and performance testing to ensure they continue to protect patients.

UCV servicing is not a job for a general HVAC engineer. These are precision systems with specific airflow patterns, entrainment characteristics, and filter requirements that demand specialist knowledge and experience.

What We Do

  • Pre-filter and HEPA filter changes
  • Entrainment testing to confirm clean zone performance
  • Airflow velocity and uniformity measurement
  • Canopy integrity checks
  • Diffuser face condition assessment
  • Lighting and operational checks
  • Full documentation and reporting against HTM 03-01

13 Years of UCV Experience

Our founder has serviced and validated UCV systems for over 13 years across dozens of NHS trusts. This is not a service we offer alongside other work. It is core to what we do, and that depth of experience means we spot problems that a less specialist engineer would miss.

Common UCV Issues We Find

  • Incorrectly fitted replacement filters causing bypass
  • Deteriorating diffuser faces affecting airflow uniformity
  • Entrainment failures from theatre configuration changes
  • Reduced clean zone performance from obstructions or equipment changes
  • Fan degradation reducing overall airflow rates

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should UCV canopies be serviced?

Servicing intervals are defined in your maintenance policy, typically six-monthly for filter checks and annually for full performance testing as part of HTM 03-01 Part B verification.

Do you service all UCV canopy types?

Yes. We service canopies from all major manufacturers including Howorth, MAT, and others. Our independence from any manufacturer means we assess performance objectively regardless of brand.

What is entrainment testing?

Entrainment testing confirms that the UCV canopy is drawing room air into its airflow pattern correctly, maintaining the clean zone over the operating table. Failed entrainment means the ultra-clean environment may not be protecting the patient.
