LEV Testing FAQs
Is LEV testing a legal requirement?
Yes. Under COSHH Regulation 9, any LEV system that controls exposure to hazardous substances must undergo thorough examination and testing by a competent person. This is a legal duty on the employer.
How often does LEV need to be tested?
At least every 14 months for most systems. Some processes listed in COSHH Schedule 4 (e.g. certain lead and asbestos work) require more frequent testing, sometimes every 6 months or even monthly.
What happens if my LEV system fails?
We report exactly what failed, why, and what remedial action is needed, prioritised by risk. Once repairs are carried out, we can re-test to confirm the system is back in adequate control and issue a fresh report.
What is a BOHS P601 qualification?
P601 is the British Occupational Hygiene Society’s recognised qualification for carrying out thorough examination and testing of LEV systems. It is the competence standard the HSE expects from anyone examining LEV.
What does LEV testing cost?
Cost depends on the number of extraction points, system complexity, and site location. A small workshop with 2-3 hoods will cost significantly less than a multi-floor university laboratory. Contact us for a free quote.
